This exclusive five-day tour of the gardens of Venice and the Veneto begins in a private boat from the airport, gliding to the remote island of Torcello in the northern Lagoon. Later, we check in at the four-star Hotel Giorgione in the central but peaceful district of Cannaregio, on the main island of Venice. The hotel is situated in the the heart of authentic Venice, close to Rialto, Cà d’Oro and Piazza San Marco, yet away from the crowds. The following day we meet Jenny Condie, author of 'Gardens of Venice and the Veneto', who will introduce us to the rich history of Venice through its diverse and intriguing gardens. The third day sees us crossing the lagoon on a private riverboat as it navigates the Brenta Canal. For the rest of the tour we are based at the four-star Albergo Al Sole in Asolo. From this base we visit a fascinating variety of gardens and enjoy traditional dishes in local restaurants and as guests at a private villa.
Day 1: Wednesday 7th September
The tour is designed to co-ordinate with the Easyjet flight departing Berlin Schoenefeld at 9:15, arriving Venice Marco Polo at 10:55. We travel across the Lagoon in a private boat to the island of Torcello and have lunch at the famous Locanda Cipriani. Lying to the west of Burano, the island of Torcello was one of the first to be inhabited and its rich wildlife includes a colony of flamingos. In 1934, having fallen head-over-heels-in love with this enchanting corner of the lagoon, Giuseppe Cipriani bought a modest wine and oil shop and later transformed it into a small inn (locanda) with a lovely restaurant surrounded by a garden. After lunch we visit the Casa Museo Andrich where the artists Lucio Andrich & Clementina De Luca lived and worked until 2003. Over 1300 pieces of their work, from the 1950s to the 1980s are displayed in the house and garden. Time to see the 12th century mosaics in Santa Maria Assunta before we catch the boat to Venice to the Hotel Giorgione. This evening we dine together at a local restaurant with regional Veneto wines included.
Day 2: Thursday 8th September
We are joined today by Jenny Condie, author of 'Gardens of Venice and the Veneto' who will take us to some of the lesser known areas of Venice including some contrasting gardens on the Giudecca. Travel by vaporetto to the Giudecca where we visit the Chiesa del Santissimo Redentore (Church of the Most Holy Redeemer) lying behind which is a large enclosed vegetable garden tended by the monks of the Franciscan monastery. We then visit the beautiful gardens of the Bauer Palladio Hotel. Remaining on the Guidecca, we visit The Fortuny showroom and gardens. In 1919, Mariano Fortuny purchased land on the island of Giudecca. Although no visitors are permitted to enter the factory itself, in order to preserve the secret of Mariano Fortuny’s manufacturing process, the showroom is open to the public and the adjacent gardens will be opened to us today. Many Fortuny fabrics are known for their intricate floral patterns which feature exuberant vines, twisting stems and flowers in full bloom. These printed plants come to life in the garden, which is in the midst of a 5-year restoration plan. The garden is an extension of the showroom, with hydrangeas, roses, oleanders, and a host of other flora, many of which are the actual basis for Mariano Fortuny’s designs, while others are inspired by his motifs. On the return journey, visit the remarkable garden of Palazzo Cappello Malipiero Barnabò on the Grand Canal. Return to the hotel followed by a free evening.
Day 3: Friday 9th September
We step out from the hotel to board our private riverboat for a morning crossing of the Lagoon and we then float gently up the Brenta Canal as far as the Malcontenta. Here we join the coach and drive on to Villa Pisani Bolognesi Scalabrin at Vescovana for a special lunch with the owner before visiting the romantic garden, a piece of Victorian England transposed to the Veneto plain via Turkey. Later in the afternoon we visit the famous 17th-century garden of Villa Barbarigo at Valsanzibio, with its exquisite watergate, pools, statues, maze and rabbit island. We then drive to Asolo to check in at the Albergo Al Sole before dinner together in the hotel restaurant with wine included.
Day 4: Saturday 10th September
A day around Verona starting with a visit to Villa Allegri Arvedi, where elaborate broderie parterres create the foreground to a beautiful agricultural landscape, followed by an invitation to a light lunch in the 18th-century garden of Pojega at Villa Rizzardi, famous for its magnificent green theatre. In the afternoon we go into the heart of Verona to Giardino Giusti, a dramatic garden that has been attracting visitors for over four hundred years. Return to Albergo Al Sole to dine together.
Day 5: Sunday 11th September
A morning visit to Palladio’s Villa Barbaro a Maser, exquisitely frescoed by Veronese, and with a spectacular nymphaeum. The garden, although now devoid of the original planting, displays strong symmetry and elegance that complements the villa. Drive to Padua for lunch together in a local restaurant before visiting the city’s ancient Botanic Gardens where modern glass houses built to a cutting-edge design have just been completed. Return to Marco Polo airport to check-in for the return Easyjet flight departing at 19:20, arriving back in Berlin Schoenefeld at 20:55.
